At GDC 2013 (Game Developers Conference) this year Nintendo announced that they have a HTML5 web framework for developing Wii U applications. It seems they’ve also opened up the usage to smaller developers allowing more people than ever to develop content for Nintendo platforms.
This is fantastic news for game developers – and great for HTML5 – however unfortunately you have to apply for access to the framework. Hopefully this will change in the future so that everyone can get the chance to build content for the Wii U.
I would say this is the start of bringing Nintendo on a par with the Ouya console – where open source development is the bed rock of the functionality.
I must admit – I am looking forward to getting an Ouya as well 🙂
